Janelle
Marie Stensby, featured artist for the May “Flash of Light,” has
been working with glass for 28 years. She creates her art with fused
glass--melted in a kiln at approximately 1500 degrees, and with lamp
worked glass--done behind a torch.
“For me, glass is a spiritual release,” Janelle says.
“When I am behind the torch or designing my next project, I am
totally focused on my art, and the rest of the world is nonexistent,
even for just a few moments. I am on my own journey.”
Janelle melts much of her glass in a kiln. Each firing can take
a day or longer. Sometimes multiple firings are needed for a desired
effect. She has recently taken classes and begun working with
painting-on-glass. She says that 7 or 8 firings might be necessary to
complete such a project.
Early in her career, she explored stained glass, before moving
into painting with oils and acrylics. She taught the latter for a time.
Now, she teaches glass art from her home. She
is available for seminars and one-day classes.
Sculpting the human form is an important focus of Janelle’s,
because of the body’s innate beauty, power and grace. She also
creates pendants, bracelets and charms, and will do custom orders for
people, by integrating the ashes of their loving animal companions into
the jewelry keepsakes. Working with recycled glass is yet another
interest she is exploring.
Most of Janelle’s glass art is on display at her home, but if
any of your summer jaunts take you to
Saukville
,
Wisconsin
, check out
Pioneer
Village
. Jewelry and bowls by Janelle will be on display there as well.
Janelle is currently designing a website that should by up and
running in June. In the meantime, she can be contacted by phone:
