Earth Angels. We all have had them at some
point in our lives. They come in many forms, but they all have one thing in
common, they perform what appears to be a miracle and restore our faith in
life and in the goodness that exists in the world. Sometimes it is someone
you know, sometimes it is a total stranger. Sometimes the miracles are huge,
like lifting a car from a trapped baby just in time to save a life. Sometimes
the miracles are small like poofing the perfect Easter dress from the
already severely combed racks after several hours of torturous shopping
just in time to dry the tears of a distraught 10-yr-old. Always, these
Angels in human form touch us and make us feel as though life is going to go
on. As though we actually want it to.
My son is directly opposed to most
everything I hold dear. He can be found frequently saying, "Mom, why do
you have to make everything sound so S-P-I-R-I-T-U-A-L?! It's not real. Tell
me something real." His first Earth Angel came into our lives a month
or so ago. He was injured in football back in September. He was in such back
pain that he could hardly function. After several weeks of ice & trips
to the chiropractor, he was well enough to make it through the day, but any
time he was stressed, the injury hit him again.
We decided to go to our family
practitioner, Dr.
Gary Lewis in Thiensville, WI. The doctor took a look at him and
recommended that we see the new chiropractor that had just begun
working in his clinic. My son looked sideways at me, since we had
already seen a chiropractor and it didn't help much. His back pain pushed
him to give it a try anyway. So, we wandered back to Dr.
Boshoff's office. She was just coming in from a meeting, but even
in the middle of her transition, she still greeted us warmly and gave great
attention to my son & his injury. She really listened and responded with
sincere compassion, which you don't see very often anymore. He laid
down on the table and she began to work the muscles and really study the
situation. It was the first time anyone had really taken the time to
"be" with my son and he could feel it. When we left he said,
"My back feels so much better, Mom. She did the same things that the
other chiropractor did, but I think because she cared, it made more of a
difference. She kinda reminds me of you."
He was clearly touched. As was I. He was
out of pain and felt like someone in the world cared about his well-being.
It was a mini-miracle, one that she undoubtedly performs daily, but it meant
to the world to my son and it meant the world to me.
For today, I invite you to really pay
attention to the little miracles that happen in your life. Whether it is
someone holding the door at just the right time for you to carry through
with arms full of boxes, or someone saying the exact thing you need to hear
to put the pieces of your life together. However your Earth Angels manifest,
let's be thankful that they do. And equally as thankful that we are Earth
Angels to someone else along the way.
