Bringing Mindfulness into our Daily Lives
by Hollis Burkhart

Two men are waiting for a bus when a car speeds past through a puddle in the road splashing both of them. One man goes on to have a pleasant day, while the other man believes his day has now been ruined. What caused the difference?

Often in my clinical practice, I’ll relate this story of how an external event can result in opposite reactions in different people. It is quite easy for us to mindlessly make a negative judgment about events occurring outside us, which can then change the tone of our day.

We’ve learned to be pessimistic; on the flip side, we can learn to be optimistic. Martin Seligman’s fascinating book, Learned Optimism, will challenge your assumptions about “how the world is.” He explains how to change your perceptions from seeing things in the worst light to a much more optimistic view.

To bring more joy into your life this year, start challenging the messages you tell yourself and start each day with the thought that this will be a good day. Take time to check in with how you are feeling, creating a sense of mindfulness, as you move joyfully through your day.
